Why You Should Consider “Lumpy Mail” for Your Next Marketing Campaign

If you run a B2B (business-to-business) company, or if you sell high-value services to local homeowners, you know how hard it is to get past the “gatekeeper.”

Whether it is a receptionist throwing your flyer in the bin, or a homeowner tossing your postcard straight into the recycling with the rest of the junk mail, getting your message actually read is the hardest part of print marketing.

This is where “Lumpy Mail” comes in. It is an old-school marketing tactic that is incredibly effective in 2026 because so few businesses are doing it.

What is Lumpy Mail?

Lumpy mail is exactly what it sounds like: a piece of direct mail that has a physical, 3D object inside the envelope, making it literally lumpy.

When the post arrives in the morning, people sort it into two piles: “Important” (bills, handwritten letters, packages) and “Junk” (flat, glossy flyers and obvious marketing).

If an envelope is lumpy, human curiosity takes over. We cannot help ourselves. We have to know what is inside. A lumpy envelope has a near 100% open rate. It guarantees that your marketing message will at least be looked at.

Ideas for Lumpy Mail Objects

The object you put inside the envelope does not need to be expensive, but it should ideally tie into your marketing message. Here are a few examples of how small businesses can use this:

A teabag or coffee sachet: “Sit down, have a brew on us, and take two minutes to read how we can save your business money on your accountancy fees.”

A small packet of seeds: “Ready to grow your business this year? Plant these seeds, and let’s talk about your new website.”

A cheap magnifying glass: “Take a closer look at your current IT support contract. Are you really getting what you pay for?”

A single paracetamol tablet: “Is your current payroll system giving you a headache? We can cure that.”

The object grabs their attention and makes them smile. The letter inside delivers your pitch.

How to Execute a Lumpy Mail Campaign

Lumpy mail is more expensive than sending a standard postcard, so you do not send it to 5,000 random houses. You use it as a highly targeted “sniper” approach.

1. Build a highly targeted list

Identify your top 50 ideal clients in your local area. These should be high-value prospects where winning just one or two of them would easily pay for the whole campaign.

2. Handwrite the envelopes

Do not use printed labels. A handwritten envelope with a real stamp (not a franked mark) signals that this is personal correspondence, not mass marketing.

3. Write a compelling letter

The object gets the envelope opened, but the letter has to do the selling. Keep it focused on their problems and how you can solve them. End with a clear Call to Action, such as “I will call you next Tuesday at 10 AM to see if you would like to chat further.”

4. Follow up

This is the most important step. Lumpy mail warms up the prospect, but you still have to close the deal. Because you sent something memorable, when you call them a few days later, they will actually know who you are. “Hi, I’m the guy who sent you the teabag…” is a much better conversation starter than a cold call.

Lumpy mail requires a bit more effort and creativity than standard print marketing, but if you are trying to reach high-value local clients, it is one of the most effective ways to guarantee your message gets noticed.

Amazing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ service from Taylor, Henry & Team. I was a bit worried with my previous website company as they seemed to do whatever they liked and didn't take on our advice. We then had a long 11 week dry spell of leads from the website which made me very concerned. Taylor advised me that we were paying around x 3 the going rate for our website, and helped me understand lots of the technical information as to why our leads had been dropping. Taylor was able to help me leave my current contact and start a new agreement with Dead on Digital. Unexpectedly this lead to my current website provider cancelling our website in 2 days time. My old provider then put our domain directing to a competitors site!!! Dead on Digital where able to rectify this in hours with a professional looking landing page. Taylor and team worked around the clock (literally all weekend) to ensure minimal downtime. My previous company I waited 1 month for an awful website, Dead on Digital took less than a week to build a vastly superiors site -- and for 1/3 the price! Dead on Digital also helped us with SEO, website marketing and social media. We previously were wasting a considerable amount of money on Google Ads. I am very grateful that the team took the time to answer all of my questions. I would highly recommend dead on digital to all.

All the staff have been very helpful, and updates have been done promptly, all included in the ongoing monthly fee. This offers peace of mind for new businesses who may need their website to evolve as they grow. Thank you!

I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Dead On Digital. They handle our website hosting, website design, and the management of our social media channels for Quantum Decorating Services, and the level of service has been outstanding from day one. What really impressed me was the speed and professionalism they showed during the transfer from our previous marketing company. It could have been a stressful process, but the team at Dead On Digital made it seamless. Everything was handled swiftly, clearly, and with complete confidence, which gave me real peace of mind. Since then, they’ve been incredibly attentive to our needs. Our website and social media presence feel completely aligned with how I want Quantum Decorating Services to appear: professional, modern, high-quality, and trustworthy. Everything is tailor-made to reflect our brand properly. On top of that, they are very reasonably priced. For the level of service, attention, and results we receive, I’m genuinely very happy with what we pay. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Dead On Digital to any business looking for reliable, responsive, and professional digital marketing support. Can't praise all the team at Dead on Digital highly enough! I was looking for a company to take on my socials for a while and it wasn't until speaking to them, that I felt comfortable that I had found the right one. Taylor in particular has been brilliant. For somebody like myself with very little experience with social media, he has been extremely helpful and patient at every step of the process. Would highly recommend!
