How to Choose the Right Typography for Your Small Business

When small business owners think about branding, they usually focus on two things: the logo and the colours. But there is a third element that is just as important, yet often completely ignored: typography.

Typography is the style and appearance of the text you use across your business. It is the font on your website, the text on your business cards, and the lettering on your van.

Choosing the right typography is crucial because fonts have personalities. If you choose the wrong one, you send a confusing message to your customers before they have even read a single word. Here is a simple guide to choosing the right typography for your UK small business.

The Two Main Types of Fonts

To keep things simple, you only really need to understand the two main categories of fonts: Serif and Sans-Serif.

Serif fonts have little “feet” or decorative strokes at the ends of the letters (Times New Roman is the most famous example). They look traditional, established, and authoritative.

•Best for: Law firms, accountants, high-end consultants, or businesses that want to project heritage and trust.

Sans-Serif fonts do not have those little feet (Arial or Helvetica are common examples). They look clean, modern, and approachable.

•Best for: Tech companies, modern cafes, creative agencies, or businesses that want to appear friendly and forward-thinking.

The “Two Font” Rule

One of the biggest branding mistakes small businesses make is using too many fonts. A flyer with five different fonts looks messy, amateurish, and hard to read.

The golden rule of typography is to choose just two fonts for your entire brand:

1. A Header Font:

This is used for big, bold titles. It can be a bit more distinctive or characterful because it is only used in short bursts.

2. A Body Font:

This is used for paragraphs of text (like the text you are reading right now). It must be incredibly easy to read. Never use a fancy, curly, or handwritten font for body text.

Once you have chosen your two fonts, stick to them. Use them on your website, your invoices, your social media graphics, and your printed materials. This consistency builds brand recognition.

Where to Find Good Fonts (For Free)

You do not need to spend hundreds of pounds buying premium fonts. Google Fonts (fonts.google.com) is a massive library of high-quality, professional fonts that are completely free to use for commercial purposes.

Because they are web-safe, you can easily use them on your website, and you can download them to your computer to use in Word documents or design software like Canva.

Some reliable, professional Google Fonts to start with include:

•Sans-Serif: Roboto, Open Sans, Montserrat, Lato, Poppins

•Serif: Merriweather, Playfair Display, Lora, PT Serif

The “Squint Test”

Before you finalise your font choices, do the “Squint Test.”

Type out a paragraph of text about your business using your chosen body font. Step back from your screen and squint your eyes slightly. Can you still easily distinguish the shapes of the words? Does it look like a comfortable block of text to read?

If it looks cramped, spidery, or gives you a headache, choose a simpler font. Your typography should make reading effortless, not a chore.

By choosing two clean, appropriate fonts and using them consistently, you instantly elevate the professionalism of your brand without spending a penny.
