The “back to business” energy of September hits business owners just as hard as it hits parents doing the school run. There is a distinct shift that happens this time of year: the summer haze clears, people get serious again, and the next three months suddenly feel very important.
For most UK small businesses, Q4; (October, November, and December) is the most commercially significant quarter of the year. Your website needs to be ready for it. Here are four jobs worth doing now, while you still have time to do them properly.
1. Update Your Homepage for the Season
The hero section; the banner and headline at the very top of your homepage- is the first thing every new visitor sees. If it still reflects summer or has not been touched in six months, it is working against you.
The update does not need to be dramatic. Swap the main image for something that feels seasonal or neutral. Update the headline to speak to what your customers are thinking about right now.
Bad: “Enjoy the sunshine with our outdoor event packages” (in September)
Good: “Planning a winter event? Book early and we will take care of everything.”
One updated headline takes twenty minutes and can make your homepage feel completely current.
2. Test Every Contact Form and Booking Link
This is the most important technical job on this list, and the most frequently ignored.
Go to your own website right now and fill in your contact form as if you were a customer. Does the thank-you message appear? Does the email arrive in your inbox? Is it land in your spam folder instead?
Do the same with any booking links, quote calculators, or consultation request pages.
The cost of a broken contact form is genuinely incalculable. Every person who tried to reach you while it was broken is a lost lead. You will never know they were there, and they will not try again.
3. Add New Testimonials, Work, or Team Members
September is a natural moment to update the parts of your website that prove you are good at what you do: your portfolio, your case studies, your testimonials page, and your team section.
These pages do two jobs. They add fresh, relevant content that helps your SEO. And they reassure potential customers that you are active, current, and doing great work, not a business that has not updated its website since 2023.
If a client complimented your work over the summer, send them a quick message now asking whether they would be happy to leave a Google review and for you to quote them on your website. Getting that written down before October means you go into Q4 with real evidence to back up your claims.
4. Check Your Website on Your Phone with Wi-Fi Off
Sit somewhere away from your office, turn off your Wi-Fi, and load your website on mobile data. Navigate to your services page, your pricing page, and your contact form.
Is it fast? Is the text readable without zooming? Are the buttons easy to tap with a thumb? Does anything overlap, break, or disappear?
More than half of your website visitors are on their phones. If the mobile experience feels frustrating to you, it feels worse to someone who has never seen your website before, and they will leave before they reach your contact page.
These four jobs will take a morning at most. The return on that morning- more enquiries converting, fewer lost leads, a website that supports your Q4 marketing rather than undermining it will last all quarter.
