10 Common Small Business Website Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

A website can be one of the most valuable tools a small business has. It helps customers find you, learn about what you offer and decide whether to get in touch. However, many small business websites do not perform as well as they could, often because of a few common and avoidable mistakes.

If you are planning a new website or reviewing your current one, understanding these issues can help you create a stronger and more effective online presence.

1. Unclear information about what you do

One of the most common problems is a website that does not clearly explain what the business offers. Visitors should be able to understand within a few seconds what services or products are available and whether they are in the right place.

Avoid using vague descriptions or overly technical language. Keep things simple and make sure your main services are easy to see on the homepage.

2. Contact details that are hard to find

A surprising number of websites make it difficult for customers to get in touch. If visitors have to search for a phone number or email address, they may leave and contact someone else instead.

Your contact details should be clearly visible on your website. Ideally, include them:

  • On a dedicated contact page
  • In the website header or footer
  • On key pages such as the homepage and services page

Making it easy to contact you increases the chances of receiving enquiries.

3. Poor mobile experience

Most people now browse websites on their phones. In fact, over 60% of website visits come from mobile devices. If your website is difficult to read or navigate on a mobile device, visitors are unlikely to stay for long. Research shows that 73% of users will leave immediately if a site is not mobile-responsive.

Common mobile issues include:

  • Text that is too small
  • Buttons that are difficult to tap
  • Slow loading pages
  • Layouts that do not adjust to smaller screens

A mobile-friendly website ensures visitors have a smooth experience regardless of how they access it.

4. Outdated design or content

An outdated website can give the impression that a business is no longer active. Old photos, incorrect information or an outdated design may cause potential customers to lose confidence.

Regularly reviewing and updating your website helps keep it accurate and relevant. Even small updates, such as new photos or recent reviews, can make a big difference.

5. Trying to include too much

Some businesses feel they need to include everything on their website at once. This can lead to cluttered pages and confusing navigation.

A simpler approach is often more effective. Focus on clear information, easy navigation and a straightforward layout. Visitors usually want quick answers rather than large amounts of text.

6. No clear next step for visitors

A website should guide visitors towards taking action. If there is no clear next step, people may leave without contacting you.

Research shows that 70% of small business websites lack effective calls to action on their homepage. This represents a significant missed opportunity for converting visitors into customers. Make it obvious what visitors should do next.

This might include:

  • Calling your business
  • Filling in a contact form
  • Requesting a quote
  • Booking an appointment

Clear calls to action help turn website visits into real enquiries.

7. Lack of trust signals

When someone visits your website for the first time, they want reassurance that your business is genuine and reliable. Without trust signals, some visitors may hesitate. In fact, 83% of consumers avoid engaging with brands they perceive as untrustworthy.

Simple ways to build trust include:

  • Customer reviews
  • Testimonials
  • Photos of your work
  • Information about your experience
  • Clear business details

These elements help visitors feel more confident about choosing your business.

8. Slow loading pages

If a website takes too long to load, many visitors will leave before it fully appears. Research shows that a one-second delay in page load time can reduce conversions by 20%. Large images, unnecessary features or poor hosting can all affect speed.

Keeping your website simple and well-maintained helps pages load more quickly and improves the overall experience for visitors.

9. No ongoing updates or improvements

Some websites are built and then left untouched for years. Over time, this can lead to outdated information and missed opportunities.

Your website should evolve as your business grows. Updating content, adding new photos and refining information helps keep your site useful and relevant.

10. Relying only on social media

While social media can be a useful marketing tool, relying on it alone can limit your online presence. A website provides a stable and professional base that you fully control.

Using social media to support your website, rather than replace it, creates a stronger and more reliable online presence.

Keeping your website working for your business

Avoiding these common mistakes can make a significant difference to how your website performs. A clear, well-maintained and easy-to-use website helps build trust and encourages customers to get in touch.

You do not need a complicated or expensive website to achieve this. Focusing on clarity, professionalism and ease of use will always have the greatest impact.

Amazing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ service from Taylor, Henry & Team. I was a bit worried with my previous website company as they seemed to do whatever they liked and didn't take on our advice. We then had a long 11 week dry spell of leads from the website which made me very concerned. Taylor advised me that we were paying around x 3 the going rate for our website, and helped me understand lots of the technical information as to why our leads had been dropping. Taylor was able to help me leave my current contact and start a new agreement with Dead on Digital. Unexpectedly this lead to my current website provider cancelling our website in 2 days time. My old provider then put our domain directing to a competitors site!!! Dead on Digital where able to rectify this in hours with a professional looking landing page. Taylor and team worked around the clock (literally all weekend) to ensure minimal downtime. My previous company I waited 1 month for an awful website, Dead on Digital took less than a week to build a vastly superiors site -- and for 1/3 the price! Dead on Digital also helped us with SEO, website marketing and social media. We previously were wasting a considerable amount of money on Google Ads. I am very grateful that the team took the time to answer all of my questions. I would highly recommend dead on digital to all.

Dead on Digital have been great to work with. They have created a website that is just what I was looking for. Great communication and fast set up of my website. I also have the peace of mind that any tweaks I require as my business develops will be dealt with quickly. Thanks for a great service. Update- I have had my website for 7 months now and recently required quite a few website changes due to my business developing. All the staff have been very helpful, and updates have been done promptly, all included in the ongoing monthly fee. This offers peace of mind for new businesses who may need their website to evolve as they grow. Thank you!

I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Dead On Digital. They handle our website hosting, website design, and the management of our social media channels for Quantum Decorating Services, and the level of service has been outstanding from day one. What really impressed me was the speed and professionalism they showed during the transfer from our previous marketing company. It could have been a stressful process, but the team at Dead On Digital made it seamless. Everything was handled swiftly, clearly, and with complete confidence, which gave me real peace of mind. Since then, they’ve been incredibly attentive to our needs. Our website and social media presence feel completely aligned with how I want Quantum Decorating Services to appear: professional, modern, high-quality, and trustworthy. Everything is tailor-made to reflect our brand properly. On top of that, they are very reasonably priced. For the level of service, attention, and results we receive, I’m genuinely very happy with what we pay. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Dead On Digital to any business looking for reliable, responsive, and professional digital marketing support. Can't praise all the team at Dead on Digital highly enough! I was looking for a company to take on my socials for a while and it wasn't until speaking to them, that I felt comfortable that I had found the right one. Taylor in particular has been brilliant. For somebody like myself with very little experience with social media, he has been extremely helpful and patient at every step of the process. Would highly recommend!
