There’s a pattern that happens every October that a surprising number of business owners don’t know about. As the evenings get darker and the weather gets worse, people spend more time indoors, and more time online. Search traffic for a huge range of businesses goes up in October and stays elevated through to the new year.
It makes sense when you think about it. People are planning Christmas. They’re looking for local trades to sort things before winter sets in. They’re researching gifts, events, and experiences. They’re spending more time with their phones and laptops. And they’re searching.
The question is whether your website is ready for them when they do.
Check what you’re actually ranking for
Before you do anything else, it’s worth understanding your current position. Google Search Console is free and shows you exactly which search terms are bringing people to your site. If you’ve never set it up, do that first, it takes about ten minutes and gives you information you genuinely can’t get anywhere else.
Once you’re in, look at the queries report. You’ll see the searches people are already finding you through. Are there any seasonal ones? Are there searches you’re appearing for but not in a high position? Those are your opportunities.
Update your key pages for Q4
Your homepage and your main service pages are the ones that matter most. Ask yourself whether they reflect what people are actually looking for in October and November.
If you’re a florist and people are already starting to search for Christmas arrangements, does your website mention Christmas flowers? If you’re a caterer and corporate Christmas party enquiries are starting to come in, does your website have a page that speaks directly to that?
You don’t need to redesign your website. Even adding a paragraph to an existing service page, one that mentions the seasonal context, can make a difference to whether Google considers your page relevant for those searches.
The ‘Dark Evenings’ content opportunity
Here’s something worth thinking about for your blog or news section. The searches people do on dark October evenings tend to be more considered than summer search behaviour. People have more time. They’re researching more thoroughly. They’re more likely to read something properly before making a decision.
That means a well-written, genuinely useful piece of content on your website has more chance of being read, shared, and linked to in October than in the summer. If you’ve been putting off writing that blog post, this is your month.
Sort your Google Business Profile
If you serve local customers, your Google Business Profile, the thing that shows up when people search for businesses near them, is especially important in Q4. Make sure yours is up to date:
- Check that your opening hours are correct, including any changes for bank holidays or the festive period
- Add photos from the last few months if you haven’t recently
- Post an update, even a short one about what you’re offering this autumn
- Respond to any unanswered reviews
Google tends to favour profiles that look active and well-maintained. A quick tidy-up now could help you show up better over the next three months.
Don’t leave it until December
The temptation is always to think about Christmas SEO in December. But by December, the decisions have largely been made. People have already found the businesses they’re going to use. The research phase, the part where SEO really matters, happens in October and November.
Get your pages updated, your profile sorted, and your content in place this month. The businesses that do this work now are the ones that show up when it matters most.
