How Much Should a Small Business Website Cost in the UK?

One of the most common questions small business owners ask is how much a website should cost. If you have started looking into it, you have probably noticed that prices vary significantly. Some websites are advertised for a few hundred pounds, while others can cost several thousand.

This can make it difficult to know what is reasonable and what your business actually needs. The truth is that website costs in the UK vary for a reason. Understanding what affects the price will help you make a more confident and informed decision.

Why do website prices vary so much?

There is no single fixed price for a website because every business has different requirements. A simple one-page website for a sole trader will cost far less than a larger site with multiple services, booking systems or advanced features.

The main factors that influence cost include:

  • The size of the website
  • The level of design and branding
  • The number of pages
  • Functionality such as booking or e-commerce
  • Ongoing support and updates

Some businesses only need a basic online presence, while others require a more detailed site that supports regular enquiries and growth. The more complex the requirements, the more time and planning will be involved.

What do websites typically cost in the UK?

According to industry data, most small business websites in the UK cost between £3,000 and £6,000 when built by a professional agency or designer. In fact, 48% of small businesses invest between £2,500 and £10,000 on their website.

Basic websites with just a few pages may cost between £500 and £1,500, while more complex sites with e-commerce features or custom functionality can range from £5,000 to £20,000 or more. The variation depends on what the business needs and how much support is included.

Low-cost and DIY website options

Many small businesses start by using do-it-yourself website builders. These platforms can be a useful starting point and usually involve a monthly subscription rather than a large upfront fee. They allow business owners to create a basic website themselves using templates.

While this approach can work for very small or new businesses, it does require time and confidence. You are responsible for design, structure, content and updates. As a result, some websites end up looking unfinished or lacking clear information.

Low-cost websites built purely around price can sometimes create more work later. If the site does not perform well or fails to generate enquiries, businesses often need to invest again to improve it.

Professionally built websites

A professionally built website typically costs more than a DIY option, but it is designed with performance and credibility in mind. The goal is not just to have a website, but to have one that properly represents your business and encourages enquiries.

Professional websites usually include:

  • Clear structure and layout
  • Mobile-friendly design
  • Guidance on content
  • Contact and enquiry features
  • Ongoing support options

Costs vary depending on the size and type of website required. Some businesses choose to pay upfront, while others prefer monthly payment options that spread the cost over time and include ongoing support.

Thinking beyond the initial price

When comparing website costs, it is important to think beyond the initial price. A very cheap website that does not attract enquiries or reflect your business well may need replacing sooner than expected. A well-planned website that supports your business properly can provide value for years.

Instead of focusing only on cost, it helps to consider:

  • Whether the website will attract the right customers
  • If it reflects the quality of your work
  • How easy it is to update and improve
  • Whether support is available if needed

A website should support your business, not simply exist online.

Ongoing costs to be aware of

Websites usually involve some ongoing costs.

These may include:

  • Hosting and domain renewal
  • Maintenance or updates
  • Content improvements
  • SEO or marketing support

These costs help keep your website secure, up to date and performing well. Planning for them from the start can prevent surprises later on.

Choosing what is right for your business

The right website investment will depend on your goals, your industry and how important online enquiries are to your business. For some, a simple online presence is enough. For others, a more developed website will play a central role in attracting customers.

It can be helpful to think of your website as part of your business infrastructure rather than a one-off purchase. A clear, well-maintained website supports credibility, visibility and long-term growth.

Do your research before committing

When choosing a web designer or agency, it is important to do your research. Not all providers offer the same level of value, and some may charge high prices without delivering results that match the investment.

Before committing to any website project, take time to:

  • Review examples of their previous work
  • Ask for clear explanations of what is included in the price
  • Understand what ongoing costs or additional fees may apply
  • Check reviews or speak to other businesses they have worked with
  • Ensure the quoted price matches your budget and expectations

Some agencies may oversell features you do not need or add costs that were not made clear at the start. Others may deliver a website that looks professional but does not perform well or attract enquiries. Being clear about what you need and asking the right questions will help you avoid paying more than necessary for a website that does not deliver.

A realistic approach to budgeting

Most small business websites in the UK sit somewhere between very low-cost DIY options and high-end bespoke builds. The best approach is usually one that balances quality, support and affordability.

A good website should feel like an investment in your business rather than an expense. When it is built properly and kept up to date, it can continue to support enquiries and growth for years to come.

Affordable options that include ongoing support

For businesses that want a professional website without a large upfront investment, pay-monthly packages can offer a practical solution. These models typically spread the cost over time and include ongoing support, updates and maintenance as part of the service.

This approach removes the barrier of a significant initial payment and ensures that your website continues to be looked after as your business grows. Rather than paying thousands upfront and then facing additional costs for changes or updates, everything is included in a single monthly fee.

At Dead On Digital, we offer pay-monthly website packages with no upfront costs and unlimited updates. This means your website can evolve with your business without unexpected bills or complicated support arrangements. It is designed to be straightforward, affordable and focused on long-term results.

Amazing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ service from Taylor, Henry & Team. I was a bit worried with my previous website company as they seemed to do whatever they liked and didn't take on our advice. We then had a long 11 week dry spell of leads from the website which made me very concerned. Taylor advised me that we were paying around x 3 the going rate for our website, and helped me understand lots of the technical information as to why our leads had been dropping. Taylor was able to help me leave my current contact and start a new agreement with Dead on Digital. Unexpectedly this lead to my current website provider cancelling our website in 2 days time. My old provider then put our domain directing to a competitors site!!! Dead on Digital where able to rectify this in hours with a professional looking landing page. Taylor and team worked around the clock (literally all weekend) to ensure minimal downtime. My previous company I waited 1 month for an awful website, Dead on Digital took less than a week to build a vastly superiors site -- and for 1/3 the price! Dead on Digital also helped us with SEO, website marketing and social media. We previously were wasting a considerable amount of money on Google Ads. I am very grateful that the team took the time to answer all of my questions. I would highly recommend dead on digital to all.

All the staff have been very helpful, and updates have been done promptly, all included in the ongoing monthly fee. This offers peace of mind for new businesses who may need their website to evolve as they grow. Thank you!

I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Dead On Digital. They handle our website hosting, website design, and the management of our social media channels for Quantum Decorating Services, and the level of service has been outstanding from day one. What really impressed me was the speed and professionalism they showed during the transfer from our previous marketing company. It could have been a stressful process, but the team at Dead On Digital made it seamless. Everything was handled swiftly, clearly, and with complete confidence, which gave me real peace of mind. Since then, they’ve been incredibly attentive to our needs. Our website and social media presence feel completely aligned with how I want Quantum Decorating Services to appear: professional, modern, high-quality, and trustworthy. Everything is tailor-made to reflect our brand properly. On top of that, they are very reasonably priced. For the level of service, attention, and results we receive, I’m genuinely very happy with what we pay. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Dead On Digital to any business looking for reliable, responsive, and professional digital marketing support. Can't praise all the team at Dead on Digital highly enough! I was looking for a company to take on my socials for a while and it wasn't until speaking to them, that I felt comfortable that I had found the right one. Taylor in particular has been brilliant. For somebody like myself with very little experience with social media, he has been extremely helpful and patient at every step of the process. Would highly recommend!
